The University of KwaZulu‑Natal (UKZN) is one of South Africa’s leading universities for health science education.

It offers degrees in medicine, nursing, pharmacy, physiotherapy, dentistry, speech‑language therapy, and other health disciplines through its School of Health Sciences and related faculties.

Knowing the official closing dates for applications is necessary if you plan to start in 2027, especially for competitive health science programmes.

When Do UKZN Applications Open for 2027 Admission?

Applications for study at UKZN for the 2027 academic year are expected to open in April 2026.

This is the standard opening period across faculties, giving prospective students time to prepare and submit their applications.

UKZN does not typically accept applications before this period.

Most applicants apply through the Central Applications Office (CAO), which handles applications for multiple institutions including UKZN.

What Is the Closing Date for Health Science Degrees?

Health science programmes at UKZN have different closing dates depending on the degree you choose:

  1. Medicine (MBChB) – This degree is highly competitive and the closing date is usually 30 June 2026. No late applications are accepted for medicine, so you must apply well before this date if you want to be considered.
  2. Health Sciences (including Nursing and other clinical fields) – Most health sciences degrees close on 30 September 2026.
  3. All applications must be submitted before these deadlines, and UKZN does not usually accept late applications for health science disciplines.

If you miss the closing date, your application may not be considered for admission in 2027.

Applying early helps avoid technical issues or last‑minute problems with supporting documents.

How Do You Apply to UKZN for Health Science Programmes?

All applications to UKZN are submitted through the Central Applications Office (CAO) online portal:

  1. Create a CAO account and verify your email address.
  2. Complete the online application form with your personal and academic details.
  3. Select University of KwaZulu‑Natal as one of your institution choices.
  4. Enter the correct programme codes for your health science choices (medicine, nursing, pharmacy, etc.).
  5. Upload certified copies of your supporting documents before submitting.
  6. Pay the non‑refundable CAO application fee.
  7. Submit your application before the relevant health science deadline.

It is important to start the application early so you have time to gather documents and resolve any issues before the deadline.

Do Postgraduate Health Science Programmes Have Different Dates?

Postgraduate degrees in the health sciences, such as honours, postgraduate diplomas, and masters (coursework), usually have later closing dates than undergraduate programmes.

Common postgraduate deadlines include 30 September for honours/diploma entry and 31  October for master’s coursework.

Research‑based masters and doctoral programmes may not have fixed closing dates and often require direct contact with the relevant school or faculty.

Always check the UKZN postgraduate prospectus or faculty admissions page for the specific programme you wish to apply for since closing dates can vary.

What Documents Must You Submit With Your Application?

For undergraduate health science applications, you must upload:

  1. A certified copy of your South African ID or passport if international.
  2. Certified copies of your Grade 11 and Grade 12 results.
  3. Any additional documents required for your programme (e.g., portfolios or questionnaires for some health science majors).
  4. Proof of payment of the CAO application fee.

Ensure all documents are clear and legible. Incomplete documentation can delay the evaluation of your application or lead to non‑consideration.

Why Are Health Science Deadlines So Important?

Meeting the correct closing dates is crucial for several reasons:

  1. High competition: Health science programmes, especially medicine, receive many applicants and have limited places.
  2. No late submissions: UKZN does not usually accept late applications for medicine or other health science degrees.
  3. Timely document processing: Early submission allows time for document processing and verification before the selection committee reviews applications.
  4. Offer deadlines: If you receive an offer, you may need to confirm your intention to study and make arrangements before registration begins.

Applying early also gives you time to check your application status and correct any errors before the deadline.

How Are Offers Communicated After You Apply?

Once your application is submitted to the CAO and processed by UKZN:

  1. You will receive confirmation that your application was received.
  2. UKZN may issue conditional offers based on pending final results.
  3. Final offers are made after matric results are released and all documents have been verified.
  4. You must accept your offer through the CAO portal before the deadline specified in the letter.

Monitor your email and CAO profile regularly to stay up to date with your application status.
